The "You Matter" Flannel: A Symbol of Hope and Connection
August 14 2024 – Nicole Jones
At Hales Speed Shop, we’ve always believed that our clothing is more than just fabric and stitching—it’s a reflection of who we are, what we stand for, and the stories that shape us. Our latest creation, the "You Matter" Flannel, is a testament to that belief, born out of a deeply personal challenge and a shared commitment to making a difference.
It all started with a call to action from Justin “Gypsy” Newman, known to many as TheIrishHooligan on TikTok. In one of his heartfelt videos, Justin posed a challenge to flannel companies: create a themed shirt to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. It was a bold request, one that carried the weight of an issue too often shrouded in silence and stigma. But it was also a call we couldn’t ignore.
Stefanie, known as dahliathedyna on TikTok, saw Justin’s video and immediately thought of us. She tagged Hales, and without hesitation, Colin—who is not only part owner but also the brains behind the inspiration and designs of our flannels—stepped up to the plate. This was more than just a design opportunity—it was a chance to be part of something much bigger. In that moment, the idea for the "You Matter" Flannel was born.
Designing a flannel that would carry such an important message was no small feat. Colin went straight to work, sketching out a unique pattern inspired by the colors of the suicide awareness ribbon. Each hue was chosen with care, symbolizing hope, awareness, and the fight to bring light to the darkest of places. But time was not on our side. Our custom flannels typically take around six months to manufacture, and we had exactly that long to nail down the design and get it into production. The pressure was on, but we knew we had to get it right.
As the design took shape, life had a way of reminding us just how interconnected we all are. One morning, as Colin was dropping his son off at school, he crossed paths with Stefanie. In a twist of fate, they realized their kids went to school together. What started as a virtual collaboration quickly turned into a real-world connection, underscoring the very message our flannel would carry: You matter. We all matter. And together, we can make a difference.
Over the next few months, the "You Matter" Flannel went from concept to reality. Every detail was poured over, every stitch intentional. And now, just in time for Suicide Awareness Month in September, we’re proud to launch this special piece—a flannel that’s more than just clothing; it’s a symbol of solidarity, of hope, and of the power of community.
September holds a special significance when it comes to suicide prevention. It’s a time to raise awareness, to break the silence, and to offer support to those who need it most. World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th marks a global effort to prevent suicides, reminding us that our actions, no matter how small, can save lives. Throughout the month, mental health advocates, survivors, and allies unite to shine a light on this crucial issue, promoting understanding and compassion.
At Hales, we’re committed to doing our part. That’s why we’re donating a portion of each sale of the "You Matter" Flannel to the Hear My Cry Foundation, a 501c(3) charitable organization dedicated to addressing the growing epidemic of suicide. The foundation’s mission is deeply personal to its founder, Tazora Moore, who lost her husband, Daryl Wayne Moore, to suicide in July 2012. In his memory, Hear My Cry Foundation works tirelessly to support those impacted by suicide, particularly in underserved communities.
We invite you to join us in this mission. With every purchase of the "You Matter" Flannel, you’re not just adding a new piece to your wardrobe—you’re contributing to a cause that truly matters. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can remind each other that we’re never alone.
